Sports museums struggle to draw fans, turn profit

"It's about stopping the bleeding, and … renewing people's confidence in this organization," said Bob Kendrick, of the Negro leagues museum, which recently brought him back as president after he was passed over for the job three years ago when he was marketing director.

The developments come 2½ years after the $93 million Sports Museum of America in Manhattan, N.Y., went out of business after nine months and the Sports Museum of Los Angeles closed to the general public after less than four months.

A combination of the recession and attendance projections more inflated than the egos of some of the athletes on the plaques has several sports museums awash in red ink. But Mike Gibbons, the president of the ISHA, says he thinks the outlook is better than it was a year ago. "I'm not hearing that people are on the edge," he says.
