Sen. Rand Paul is flush with outrage about a grave injustice. The Kentucky Republican, who sits on the Senate energy committee, let loose with a steaming tirade at a hearing last week about ... toilets. Paul blames the nanny government for forcing consumers to buy energy-efficient appliances, whether they be light bulbs, refrigerators — or toilets. Paul takes selfish self-interest to new heights, the greater good be damned.

What’s worse, Paul equated choosing an appliance with choosing an abortion. "I find it really appalling and hypocritical, and think there should be some self-examination from the administration on the idea that you favor a woman’s right to an abortion, but you don’t favor a woman or a man’s right to choose what kind of light bulb, what kind of dishwasher, what kind of washing machine."

Kathleen Hogan, the deputy assistant for energy conservation at the Department of Energy, was on the receiving end of this insulting rant. She calmly stated that appliance standards are the result of bipartisan legislation over the past several decades. But the senator was having none of it. "I just want a toilet that works," he said. Hogan said she could help him find one.

"Are you going to pay for it?" was the senator’s witty rejoinder. An odd remark for a man who has written that "libertarian principles of limited government, self-reliance and respect for the Constitution are embedded within my constitutional conservatism."

Paul has gotten into trouble in the past for saying the 1964 Civil Rights Act was government intrusion that he wouldn’t have supported. (After the uproar, he changed his mind.) And late last year, he dismissed the idea of taxing the wealthy because, as he told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, "Well, the thing is, we’re all interconnected. There are no rich. There are no middle class. There are no poor." That should make everyone feel better.
